Writing your first resume in India is both easier and harder than it seems. Easier because the expectations for 0–2 year candidates are calibrated appropriately. Harder because you have limited experience to work with — so every choice of structure, language, and content matters more. Most fresher resumes in India make the same 5–6 mistakes that can be fixed in under 2 hours. This guide walks you through building a strong first resume from scratch.
What Recruiters Expect From a Fresher Resume
For 0–2 year candidates, Indian recruiters are not looking for extensive work history. They are looking for:
- Academic performance — CGPA, institution, branch
- Relevant skills — technical tools, languages, platforms
- Evidence of initiative — projects, internships, certifications
- Communication ability — how well the resume is written and structured
- Alignment with the role — do your skills match what the JD requires?
The Right Format for a Fresher Resume in India
Length: 1 page. Strictly. Freshers should never exceed 1 page.
Section order for freshers:
- Name + Contact (phone, email, LinkedIn URL)
- Professional Summary (3 lines)
- Education (reverse chronological — most recent first)
- Skills (technical + tools)
- Projects (2–4 best projects with tech stack and outcome)
- Internships (if any)
- Certifications
- Extracurriculars / Activities (optional — relevant only)
Section-by-Section Guide
Professional Summary
Do not write “Seeking a challenging role in a growth-oriented organisation.” That is the most common and most useless summary line in Indian fresher resumes.
Write instead: “[Degree] graduate from [Institution] with strong skills in [2–3 relevant areas]. Built [specific project]. Seeking [specific role] where I can [brief contribution goal].”
Education
List your most recent degree first. Include:
- Degree + Specialisation
- Institution name
- Graduation year
- CGPA or percentage (if above 7.0 CGPA or 65% — include it; if below, it is optional)
- Relevant coursework (optional — only if directly relevant to the target role)
Skills Section
Organise by category. Do NOT list MS Word or PowerPoint as skills unless they are specifically relevant to the role. For tech roles:
- Programming Languages: Python, Java, C++
- Frameworks: Django, Spring Boot, React
- Databases: MySQL, MongoDB
- Tools: Git, JIRA, Docker
- Cloud: AWS (basic), GCP (basic)
Projects Section (Most Important for Freshers)
This is the highest-impact section for freshers because it demonstrates real capability. For each project:
- Title — descriptive, not generic (“E-commerce Recommendation Engine” not “Final Year Project”)
- Tech stack — list the specific tools and languages used
- Problem solved — 1 line on what problem it addressed
- Outcome — a number if possible (accuracy %, users served, transactions processed, speed improvement)
Example:
Crop Yield Prediction Model | Python, Scikit-learn, Pandas, Matplotlib
Built a machine learning model predicting crop yield from soil and weather data for 5 Indian crops. Achieved 87% accuracy on test data. Presented at IEEE-INDICON 2024. [GitHub link]
Internship (if applicable)
Even 1–2 months of internship is worth listing:
- Company name + city
- Role title
- Dates
- 2–3 bullets: what you did + what tech + outcome
If no internship: substitute with a freelance project or a significant academic contribution.
Common Fresher Resume Mistakes in India
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| 3-page resume with padded content | Cut to 1 page — quality over quantity |
| Objective statement: “seeking challenging role” | Replace with a specific 3-line summary |
| Listing all hobbies (cricket, music, cooking) | List only if genuinely relevant or impressive |
| Generic project titles | Use descriptive, specific project names |
| No CGPA (when it’s actually good) | Include 7.0+ CGPA — it matters for freshers |
| Listing MS Office as a skill | Remove unless explicitly in the JD |
| References “available on request” | Remove entirely — no one sends references at resume stage |
ATS Tips Specific to Fresher Resumes
- Use keywords from the JD in your skills section and project descriptions
- Avoid fancy templates with columns or graphics — use clean, single-column format
- File format: .docx for Naukri and most job portals; PDF for email applications
- File name: FirstName_LastName_Role_2024.docx
Template Summary
| Section | What to Include | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | 3 lines — degree + skills + target role | 3 lines |
| Education | All degrees, CGPA if strong | 4–6 lines |
| Skills | Categorised by type | 8–12 items |
| Projects | 2–4 best projects with outcomes | 3–4 lines each |
| Internship | If any — 2–3 bullets | 3–4 lines |
| Certifications | 2–4 relevant ones | 1 line each |
